Facts on Latinos and Latino Education
Hispanics constitute 14.1% of the total population of the United States. They are 17.4% of the population 18-24 years old. Latinos are the largest minority and the fastest growing ethnic group in the US population. They are expected to reach 59.8 million people, constituting 17.8% of the total US population by the year 2020.
53.2% of Hispanic students who enter 9th grade complete 12th grade and graduate with a regular diploma. 63.3%% of Hispanics 25-29 years old completed high school.
Latinos are 11.4% of undergraduate enrollment at all institutions and 9.5% of undergraduate enrollment at four-year institutions. 7.7% of bachelor’s degrees go to Hispanics. 11.2% of 25-to-29-year-old Hispanics complete a bachelor’s degree or higher.
52% of Latino students attend Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), those colleges and universities whose student population is more than 25% Hispanic. HSIs awarded 37.9% of bachelor’s degrees obtained by Hispanics.
The percentage of the federal workforce that is Latino is 7.6%. Hispanics represent 12.8% of the civilian work force.
